Music (a brief essay)

I've heard it said, when you're feeling happy, you hear the music, but when you're depressed, you hear the lyrics.  There is some truth in that, as so many of us feel it speaks directly to us in the words, but the sounds are something we don't actually process.  For awhile there, I was into electronica music, and I could feel how magical the song presented alternative sounds.  It truly is 'feel good' music.

If you ever want to apply to Harvard Law School, on the application, they ask you if you can play either the piano or the violin.  To be schooled in music takes a whole person dedicating time and talent and attention, but it's not something people go around with this badge.  My cousin Molly was nearly forced to play the piano at church, something she hated, but it must be like riding a bike, you never lose it once you got it.

Since it's known that I take 3 anti anxiety pills a day, the greatest part of my day is when the music comes on, feeling it deep into my memories where I can hide for several hours in some of that bliss.  I've mentioned before that the Quad Cities lost its soul when they took off the oldies station, but I guess that's what we have You Tube for, and old CD;s too.  My daughter has a light, beautiful singing voice, but mine is loud and aggressive.  She can play guitar and keyboard by ear.  Both of my kids love music as much as I do, in a large part, I fell in love with it from all the old Catholic songs.
